Teaching Students About the Differences Between the words “May” and “Can”

When learning the English language, understanding the difference between “may” and “can” can be a challenge for students. Both words refer to permission, but there are nuances in meaning that can be confusing. Therefore, it is essential for educators to explain the differences between these two modal verbs.

The word “can” is used to describe one’s ability to do something. For example, “I can speak Spanish” means that I have the ability to express myself in Spanish. Alternatively, “may” is used to express permission. For example, “May I leave the classroom early?” is asking for permission to leave early.

It is important for students to understand that using “can” to request permission is technically incorrect. Instead, “may” should be used when asking for permission. For instance, “Can I go to the bathroom?” is technically incorrect, and a better way of asking this would be “May I go to the bathroom?”

A great way to help students understand the difference between “can” and “may” is through exercises and real-life examples. Students can play role-playing games in which one student asks the other for permission using “can” and the other student corrects them by using “may.” By doing this, students can establish the correct use of these words in a practical way.

Another effective teaching method is using playful visuals. For example, educators can use a “can” of soda and a “may” flower to teach the difference between the two. Holding up the soda can, teachers could ask the class “What can this?” and then explain that it can’t do anything. You can, however, explain that the plant is a may flower and ask what it can do- and the response is it can bloom.

Furthermore, educational videos and online resources can also be beneficial in helping students understand the difference between “can” and “may.” These resources can explain the grammar rules and provide examples in context. Students can access these resources on their own time, rewatching and reviewing the content as needed.

Teaching the difference between “can” and “may” is essential for English language learning. Understanding the difference between the two words is not just about correct grammar but also about proper communication. It helps students to confidently communicate their requests and understand when others are seeking approval. Therefore, educators must invest the time to ensure that students learn the difference between these two words thoroughly.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
