New Mom Resents Pets: Reddit Post Sparks Empathy

A new mom’s brutally honest Reddit post about resenting her pets after the arrival of her baby has sparked a wave of empathy and understanding from fellow mothers, highlighting the often-unseen struggles of balancing motherhood with pre-existing family dynamics.

The post, titled “My Pets Hate Me Now,” detailed the author’s feelings of resentment towards her dog and cat, who seemed to be jealous of the attention now being showered on the newborn. The mom described feeling frustrated and exhausted, unable to provide the same level of care to her pets as before, and lamenting the lack of understanding from her partner who seemingly didn’t grasp the enormity of the shift in her life.

“I feel like I’m constantly picking up after them, cleaning up after them, and just trying to keep them from destroying the house,” the post read. “I used to love spending time with them, but now I just feel resentful. It’s like they don’t understand that I’m trying to raise a human being here.”

The post resonated deeply with countless other mothers, who flooded the comments with similar experiences and heartfelt advice. Many expressed understanding of the resentment, acknowledging that the transition to motherhood is incredibly demanding and can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed, even by beloved pets.

“I totally get it,” commented one user. “My dog used to be my shadow, and now he just sits and stares at me with this sad, abandoned look in his eyes. It’s heartbreaking, but I also know it’s a phase.”

Other comments offered practical solutions, such as setting up designated playtimes for pets to ensure they receive adequate attention, enlisting the help of partners or family members to share the responsibility, and most importantly, allowing themselves to feel the feelings without judgment.

The post served as a powerful reminder that motherhood is not always idyllic, and that women often struggle with difficult emotions that are rarely discussed openly. It also highlighted the importance of a supportive community, where mothers can find solace, share their experiences, and learn from one another.

As the original poster received an outpouring of empathy and helpful advice, it became clear that her experience was not unique. The shared struggles of adjusting to motherhood, juggling responsibilities, and potentially feeling resentment towards beloved pets served as a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of mothers everywhere.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
