Cost is a major barrier: College is more expensive than ever, impacting access and affordability for many.

Not all degrees are created equal: Earnings potential varies significantly across different fields, highlighting the need for career-focused guidance.

Debt burdens are crippling: Student loan debt is a massive issue, impacting graduates’ ability to start families, buy homes, and invest in their future.

Online learning is here to stay: The rise of online courses and programs offers flexibility and accessibility but necessitates new approaches to quality assurance and student support.

Workforce needs are evolving: The job market is rapidly changing, demanding a constant focus on skills development and lifelong learning.

Equity gaps persist: Students from marginalized backgrounds face significant obstacles in accessing higher education and succeeding once enrolled.

Mental health is a critical concern: The stress of academics, finances, and social pressures impacts student mental well-being and requires targeted support.

Technology plays a vital role: From virtual classrooms to personalized learning platforms, technology is reshaping the learning experience.

Faculty workloads are unsustainable: Increased demands on professors are impacting their ability to focus on research and student mentorship.

Public funding is shrinking: Declining public investment in higher education is forcing institutions to rely more heavily on tuition and fees.

International students face unique challenges: Cultural barriers, language differences, and visa complexities can hinder their integration and success.

The value of a college degree is evolving: Employers increasingly prioritize practical skills and experience over traditional qualifications.

Data-driven decision-making is crucial: Collecting and analyzing data about student outcomes, workforce trends, and institutional effectiveness is essential for informed decision-making.

Collaboration is key: Building partnerships between higher education institutions, businesses, and government agencies is vital for addressing the challenges and opportunities facing the sector.

This state report serves as a powerful call to action. It forces us to confront the complexities of higher education and rethink how we can ensure its accessibility, affordability, and relevance for all students in a rapidly changing world.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
