JSU approves contracts to house students at Walthall Lofts, Courthouse

Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville State University (JSU) has taken a significant step towards addressing its growing student housing needs, approving contracts for the use of two downtown properties – Walthall Lofts and the historic Courthouse – for student housing. This move comes as JSU faces increasing enrollment and a shortage of on-campus housing options.
The Walthall Lofts, a recently renovated complex located at 313 W. Main Street, will house approximately 150 students in a mix of studio and one-bedroom apartments. The historic Courthouse, located at 100 E. Main Street, will be converted into a student housing facility with an estimated capacity of 100 students.
JSU officials highlight the strategic benefits of these new housing options. “This partnership addresses the critical need for more housing options while also revitalizing these historic downtown buildings,” said Dr. John Beehler, JSU President. “We are excited about the opportunity to provide our students with modern, convenient housing in a vibrant downtown environment.”
The renovation of the Courthouse, which has been vacant for several years, is expected to include modern amenities like study spaces, common areas, and high-speed internet. The Walthall Lofts, already equipped with modern amenities, will offer students a more traditional apartment-style living experience.
The decision to utilize downtown properties has been met with positive reactions from local businesses and residents. “We are thrilled to see JSU investing in our downtown area,” said Sarah Jones, President of the Jacksonville Downtown Development Authority. “This partnership will bring new energy and vibrancy to our city center.”
The conversion of the Courthouse and the use of the Walthall Lofts are expected to be completed by the fall 2024 semester, providing much-needed housing for JSU’s growing student population. These projects are a testament to JSU’s commitment to providing a comprehensive student experience, including access to high-quality housing options that meet the needs of a diverse student body.
