OneDrive is an essential file hosting and synchronization service for millions of users across the globe. However, like any other software application, it is not without its fair share of errors and issues. One such error that many Windows users encounter is the “The tag present in the reparse point buffer is invalid” error.

This article will guide you through the steps needed to fix this error, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience with OneDrive on your Windows device.

1. Update OneDrive

One of the first things you should try is updating your OneDrive application to its latest version. Outdated software can often lead to issues and errors, so ensuring that you’re using the latest version of OneDrive could potentially resolve the problem.

To update OneDrive, follow these simple steps:

a. Right-click on the OneDrive icon in your system tray.

b. Select “Help & Settings.”

c. Click on “Check for updates.”

If an update is available, OneDrive will download and install it automatically.

2. Reset OneDrive

Resetting OneDrive can help clear out any lingering issues that may be causing the error.

a. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.

b. Type “%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /reset” (without quotes) and press Enter.

c. Wait for about a minute, and then restart your computer.

Note: You may see a brief disappearance of the OneDrive icon from the system tray during this process. This is entirely normal and should not cause alarm.

3. Reinstall OneDrive

Another solution is to uninstall and then reinstall the OneDrive client on your computer.

a. Right-click on the Start Menu button, then select Apps & Features.

b. Search for “OneDrive” in the search bar, then click on it and select “Uninstall.”

c. Once OneDrive has been removed, visit the official OneDrive website (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/onedrive/download) to download and reinstall the client.

4. Modify Registry Editor settings

Please note that modifying your registry can be risky and may cause severe damage to your operating system if done incorrectly. We advise you to back up your registry before proceeding.

a. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.

b. Type “regedit” (without quotes) and press Enter.

c.Navigate to the following directory:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem

d. Right-click an empty area and choose “New,” then “DWORD (32-bit) Value.”

e. Name the new DWORD “LongPathsEnabled” (without quotes) and set its value to 1.

f. Click “OK,” close the Registry Editor, and restart your computer.

After trying these solutions, your OneDrive application should no longer display the “The tag present in the reparse point buffer is invalid” error message, allowing you to continue using the service seamlessly on your Windows device.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
