How Can Education Technology Lead School Improvement?

Schools across the country are looking for new ways they can improve education for learners and educators. In this contemporary age, it makes sense that most school districts would look to education technology for the answers. Is it possible that education technology could lead to school improvement and promote better outcomes for learners?

The reality is that education technology can be a powerful force in the classroom when it is used appropriately. School officials in charge of the purchasing decisions should know how they can best use education technology to promote improvement among their learners. You must know how to select the right tech to make the dramatic impact that many schools desire. If you think that a major education technology purchase could improve your school, here are the things you need to know about how to make your purchase more successful.

Make a vision for your school.

Purchasing more education technology doesn’t do your school any good if you don’t know what you would like to achieve. The initial step to improving any school is to cast a real vision for your classrooms and district. You need to identify what needs your learners and educators have before you can move forward. Developing a vision and identifying measurable goals or objectives is the key to buying the right education tech for your classrooms. This helps you identify which issues need to be solved first and narrows down which education technology items you really need.

Look for tech to support your goals.

The market is completely flooded with education technology programs and platforms that promise to help with various needs. Most of these programs are extremely flashy and easily marketable, but they won’t all suit your school’s needs. You need to ensure that every program you investigate will relate directly to one of your identified needs and goals. It may be helpful to look for scalable tech.

One education research study on the Edivate program (a scalable platform adapted to most goals) demonstrated an 18.5 percent increase on standardized assessments. This demonstrates the importance of finding education technology that truly suits your school’s needs.

Search for education technology that has been tested and proven.

Your school won’t see improvement with programs that have not been thoroughly researched, tested and proven effective. One of the major problems in the education technology community is that no one pays attention to the reliability of the systems that schools are adopting. Schools can devote a lot of money to education technology for a small payoff regarding classroom management or test scores. If you want tech to help lead school improvement, it is essential to implement tested products to help achieve your overall vision.

Education technology holds the potential to be extremely beneficial for everyone in the learning community. It can help to improve how the classroom functions and boost learner test scores. With the right platform, education technology can definitely pave the way for improvement in the classroom setting. Schools must identify their needs and perform extensive research to find the right tools that have already been tested and proven. This is no simple task, but the end results are well worth it.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
