Forsyth Tech Empowers Student Parents with Flexible Child Care (2026)

In a world where the demands of education often clash with parental responsibilities, Forsyth Technical Community College (Forsyth Tech) has emerged as a beacon of hope for student parents. Recent national research has spotlighted the college’s effective programs designed to connect student parents with essential child care resources, addressing a pressing need in the community. Published on April 5, 2026, by Education NC and North Carolina Health News, the findings highlight the significant role Forsyth Tech plays in supporting the educational journeys of parents while navigating the challenges of child care.

The Challenge of Child Care for Student Parents

One of the primary barriers faced by student parents is the availability of child care that aligns with their academic schedules. Traditional child care facilities often operate during standard business hours, which can pose a significant challenge for parents attending classes or studying in the evenings and on weekends. This disconnect can lead to higher dropout rates among student parents who struggle to balance their educational pursuits with their responsibilities at home.

Addressing Gaps in Child Care

Forsyth Tech’s initiative specifically targets these gaps by providing flexible child care solutions. The college has recognized the necessity of offering services that extend beyond the conventional hours, including evening, weekend, and drop-in options. This flexibility is crucial for student parents who may have classes that run late or who require care for short periods while they attend meetings or study sessions.

  • Evening and Weekend Care: Forsyth Tech has implemented child care services that accommodate the unique schedules of student parents, ensuring that they can attend classes without worrying about their children’s safety.
  • Drop-in Options: The introduction of drop-in care allows parents to seek immediate support when unexpected situations arise, such as a last-minute study group or a work commitment.
  • Community Partnerships: Forsyth Tech has established partnerships with local child care providers to expand the range of services available, creating a comprehensive network of support for student families.

Local Child Care Shortage

Despite the college’s efforts, the broader community continues to grapple with a shortage of child care facilities. This shortage exacerbates the challenges faced by student parents, as available options may not meet the diverse needs of families. According to recent statistics, many child care centers are at capacity, leaving parents with limited choices. Forsyth Tech’s initiative aims to alleviate some of this pressure by becoming a reliable resource for student families.

Supporting Parental Education

The research underscores that access to reliable child care is not just a convenience, but a crucial factor in supporting parental education. By facilitating child care, Forsyth Tech enables student parents to focus on their studies, participate in campus life, and ultimately achieve their academic goals. The program reflects a growing recognition of the importance of parent-friendly policies in higher education, which can lead to improved outcomes for both parents and their children.

Success Stories and Impact

Many student parents at Forsyth Tech have shared their success stories, illustrating the profound impact that accessible child care has had on their educational journeys. For instance, a single mother enrolled in a nursing program reported that having access to evening child care allowed her to complete her coursework without the constant worry of arranging care for her child. This level of support has empowered numerous parents to pursue their degrees, which can lead to better job opportunities and an improved quality of life for their families.

Looking Ahead

As Forsyth Tech continues to innovate and adapt its child care services, the college is also looking toward the future. Plans to expand the program include increasing partnerships with local organizations and exploring additional funding sources to enhance child care availability. Furthermore, the college is committed to ongoing research and assessment of its programs to ensure that they effectively meet the needs of student parents.

Conclusion

Forsyth Tech’s commitment to connecting student parents with essential child care resources is a testament to the college’s dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment. As highlighted by the recent national research, the challenges of balancing parenthood with education are significant, but initiatives like those at Forsyth Tech are paving the way for more equitable access to education for all. By providing flexible child care solutions and actively addressing the shortages in the community, Forsyth Tech is not only supporting student parents but also setting a standard for other institutions to follow.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
