Several activities and projects in chemistry can make teaching and learning science engaging and keep boredom away.

Make Slime

If you have a lot of experience in making slime, you can create various versions of it. Otherwise, try the kids’ favorite borax and white glue recipe.

Crystal Spikes

You can use borax, sugar, table salt, or Epsom salt for this experiment. Place a solution of any of these items on a piece of construction paper and keep it in a sunny place or where there is sufficient air circulation. Crystals will start forming when the paper dries.

Make a Volcano with Baking Soda and Vinegar

You can make a cone or use a two-liter bottle as a volcano. It is an easy experiment, and the eruption takes place within minutes.

Create a Fountain with Diet Soda and Mentos

You can do this activity in the backyard. It creates a more spectacular result than the baking soda experiment.

Rock Candy

It is not possible to grow the sugar crystals quickly, so more time is needed for this project. Ultimately, it leads to the formation of rock candy that is edible.

7 Layered Liquid Column

You can make a colorful column comprising several layers of household liquids. It demonstrates the principles of miscibility and density.

Ice Cream Baggie

It illustrates freezing point depression. There is no need to use any dishes, so it is easy to clean up after the project.

Make pH Paper with Cabbage

Use cabbage juice to make strips of pH paper to check which household chemicals are acidic.

Tie-Dye with a Sharpie

Use Sharpie pens to embellish your T-shirt. This project illustrates chromatography and diffusion. It also helps to create artistic clothing.

Make Flubber

Water and soluble fiber are made use of in this project. Flubber is a type of slime that is not very sticky. It is safe to eat. But its taste is not very appealing.

Invisible Ink

Use baking soda to write an invisible message. Apply some grape juice on the paper to read it.

Bouncing Balls

You can make opaque or transparent bouncing balls by mixing different ingredients.

Look for Iron in Food Items

Use a magnet and a food item that contains iron to perform this experiment.

Candy Chromatography

Use a saltwater solution and coffee filter to examine the different pigments in candies.

Recycle Paper

It is possible to recycle paper to make cardstock for all different types of crafts.

Foam Fight

It is similar to the volcano experiment as it involves a reaction between vinegar and baking soda. It can be a little messy if you use food coloring.

Alum Crystals

It is possible to grow alum crystals quickly and easily.

Rubber Egg

Vinegar plays a significant role in this project. You can soak an egg in a bowl of vinegar. Ultimately there will be a rubbery and bouncy egg.

Ivory Soap Sculpture

The soap will bubble up like shaving cream in your microwave. The smell of Ivory soap will remain in your kitchen after the experiment.

Make the Egg Fall into a Bottle

Use scientific principles to make a boiled egg fall into a bottle.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
