Every year, students have to decide which major they want to study at college. While they should base this on their interests and abilities, it is interesting to see what the most popular choices in the United States are. Below, we have made a list of the ten most popular college majors over the past decade.

Business

Business degrees are one of the most popular undergraduate degrees in the world, let alone the USA. In fact, it was recorded that about 19% of bachelor’s degrees awarded in 2018 were for business students.

Social Sciences And History

Every year, more and more students are pursuing careers in the social science sector. In fact, in 2018, more than 160,000 degrees were awarded to students in this field, making it one of the USA’s most popular majors.

Biological And Biomedical Sciences

In 2018, more than 119,000 degrees were awarded to students who studied a major in this field. Since 2006, biological and biomedical sciences have increased in popularity by almost 70%, making it one of the fastest-growing courses in the States.

Communication And Journalism

Students who obtain these degrees can get jobs in just about any industry. Every year, almost 95,000 college students receive a degree in communication and journalism, making it an incredibly popular field.

Education

In 2018, more than 80,000 bachelor’s degrees were earned by students in this field. Education is another field that will always offer job opportunities, hence the reason for its popularity.

Health Professions

We will always need health professionals, now more than ever. In 2018, it was recorded that over 245,000 bachelor degrees were awarded to students who studied health-related majors.

Engineering

It is not very surprising that engineering is one of the most popular college majors. In 2018, over 122,000 students received a degree in this major. There are various reasons for this field’s popularity, including the fact that engineers have plenty of job opportunities.

Psychology

Psychology is another college major that has been popular for many years. In 2018, more than 116,000 degrees were awarded to students in the field. This number is expected to rise dramatically over the next couple of years.

Visual And Performing Arts

Even though this field’s earning potential is much lower than the others, it is still one of the most popular majors. A massive 88,000 bachelor’s degrees were awarded in 2018, and this number continues to grow.

Computer And Information Sciences

Even though this major is seen as one of the most difficult in the world, it is still very popular. In 2018, nearly 80,000 degrees were awarded to students in this field.

Concluding Thoughts

The ten most popular majors in the USA include business, social sciences, history, biological and biomedical sciences, communication and journalism, education, health professions, engineering, psychology, visual and performing arts, and computer and information sciences.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
