CPAC 2023: Key Highlights & Themes from the Texas Conference

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) held in Grapevine, Texas, this year marked a significant moment in the political landscape as it took place without the presence of former President Donald Trump. This absence, the first in nearly a decade, did not diminish the fervor of the event, which was characterized by intense discussions around Trump’s legacy, ongoing party dynamics, and the upcoming midterm elections.

Trump’s Shadow Looms Large

Even in his absence, Trump was a central figure at the conference. Attendees frequently referenced his policies and leadership during discussions. The conference served as a platform for many speakers to express their allegiance to the Trump era, emphasizing the need to maintain his agenda within the Republican Party.

Debates on Foreign Policy and Military Engagement

One of the more contentious topics during the event was the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran. Many speakers voiced their opinions on the necessity of a strong military posture and criticized the Biden administration’s approach to international relations. The discussions underscored a desire among conservatives to revert to a more hawkish stance on foreign policy, reminiscent of Trump’s approach.

Immigration Policies: A Point of Pride

Attendees expressed pride regarding the strict immigration policies enacted during Trump’s presidency. Many speakers highlighted the importance of border security and reiterated the need for a crackdown on illegal immigration as a key issue going into the midterms. The sentiment was clear: immigration remains a top priority for the Republican base, and any candidate seeking support must align with these views.

Unity and Division Within the Party

While the conference showcased a strong allegiance to Trump, it also illuminated the fractures within the party. Many speakers urged Republicans to avoid infighting and focus on unity as they approach the midterm elections, which are anticipated to be challenging for the party. The call for solidarity was echoed by various influential figures at the conference, who stressed that internal conflicts could jeopardize electoral success.

Calls for a Unified Front

In light of the upcoming elections, several speakers emphasized the importance of presenting a unified front against the Democrats. This message resonated particularly well with grassroots activists, who were enthusiastic about mobilizing their efforts to ensure Republican victories across various states. The desire for unity was palpable, with many sessions dedicated to strategies for overcoming divisions and fostering a collaborative spirit.

Grassroots Activism Takes Center Stage

The conference also highlighted the critical role of grassroots activism in shaping the future of the Republican Party. Many speakers encouraged attendees to engage with their local communities, emphasizing that real change begins at the grassroots level. This focus on community involvement was seen as essential for energizing the base and promoting conservative values.

Looking Ahead to the Midterms

As the midterm elections draw closer, the sentiment at CPAC was one of determination and resolve. Many attendees expressed optimism about the Republican Party’s chances, citing dissatisfaction with the current administration’s policies and a belief that voters would rally behind conservative candidates. The discussions at CPAC underscored a collective hope that the party could harness its energies to reclaim legislative power.

Potential Candidates Emerge

In addition to discussions focused on Trump and party unity, the conference also allowed potential candidates for upcoming elections to showcase their platforms. Many emerging leaders took the stage to present their visions for the future, garnering support from attendees eager for fresh faces and new ideas within the party.

Conclusion: A Defining Moment for the GOP

CPAC 2023 served as a critical juncture for the Republican Party. While Trump’s absence marked a significant shift, the conference was a clear indication that his influence remains strong among party members. As Republicans look toward the midterm elections, the themes of loyalty, unity, and grassroots activism stood out as pivotal elements in their strategy moving forward. The event not only reflected the current state of the party but also provided a glimpse into its potential future as it navigates the complexities of American politics.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
