Stretching over 13,000 miles across northern China, this ancient wall is not only a symbol of Chinese culture but also an incredible feat of engineering. For kids, learning about the Great Wall can be an exciting adventure filled with fascinating facts and stories. The Great Wall of China was built over several centuries, with its construction beginning as early as the 7th century BC. The wall was primarily built to protect Chinese states and empires from invasions by nomadic tribes from the north.

The most famous sections of the wall that we see today were constructed during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). During this period, the wall was strengthened and rebuilt to defend against invasions from the Mongols. The Great Wall served not only as a physical barrier but also as a means of controlling trade routes and immigration.

Building the Great Wall was a monumental task that required a vast workforce and immense resources.

Laborers, soldiers, and prisoners were all enlisted to help with the construction. Here are some key points about the construction process:

Materials Used: The wall was built using various materials, including earth, wood, bricks, and stones. The materials used often depended on the local resources available in the area.

Techniques: Builders used simple tools and techniques to construct the wall. For example, they would often pack earth and stones into wooden frames to create a sturdy structure.

Challenges: The builders faced numerous challenges, including harsh weather, difficult terrain, and limited resources. Many workers endured tough conditions, and some even lost their lives during construction.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
