In today’s competitive job market, attracting and retaining top talent is crucial for any business’s success. While onboarding is essential for new hires to smoothly transition into their roles, a less-discussed but equally impactful practice is preboarding.

Preboarding, the process of engaging with new hires before their start date, offers a multitude of benefits for both employees and employers. Here are eight practical perks every company should consider:

  1. Reduced Anxiety and Increased Excitement: Preboarding alleviates new hire anxiety by providing a structured and informative introduction to the company culture, expectations, and team. This early engagement fosters excitement and anticipation, making the first day feel less overwhelming and more welcoming.
  2. Enhanced Employee Engagement from Day One: By providing new hires with a glimpse into their future roles and responsibilities, preboarding encourages them to proactively prepare and ask questions. This proactive approach translates into greater engagement and a smoother transition into their new roles.
  3. Improved Retention Rates: A well-structured preboarding program can significantly increase employee retention. New hires who feel welcomed and prepared are more likely to stay with the company long-term, saving the company time and resources on recruitment and onboarding.
  4. Increased Productivity and Faster Ramp-up Time: By familiarizing new hires with the company’s tools, systems, and procedures beforehand, preboarding allows them to hit the ground running. They are more productive and confident, resulting in quicker ramp-up time and a faster return on investment.
  5. Stronger Company Culture and Sense of Belonging: Preboarding provides a unique opportunity to showcase the company’s culture and values. Through personalized welcome messages, curated content, and introductions to key stakeholders, new hires feel a stronger sense of belonging and become more invested in the company’s success.
  6. Improved Communication and Collaboration: Preboarding allows for early communication with new hires, addressing any questions or concerns they may have. This open dialogue fosters trust and promotes better collaboration from the start.
  7. Enhanced Employer Branding: A well-executed preboarding program serves as an extension of your employer branding. It showcases your company’s commitment to employee experience and creates a positive first impression, attracting and retaining top talent.
  8. Streamlined Onboarding Process: Preboarding can significantly streamline the onboarding process by addressing essential information and procedures upfront. This allows for more focused attention on the critical aspects of the role during the official onboarding process.

Implementing a Preboarding Program:

Define your goals: Identify the key benefits you want to achieve with your preboarding program.

Develop engaging content: Create a personalized experience that welcomes new hires and provides them with relevant information and resources.

Choose the right format: Utilize a combination of digital tools, video messages, interactive quizzes, and other engaging formats to maximize impact.

Measure your success: Track key metrics such as employee satisfaction, retention rates, and productivity to gauge the effectiveness of your preboarding program.

By embracing preboarding, companies can create a more positive and productive onboarding experience for new hires, setting them up for success and fostering a stronger company culture. It’s an investment worth considering to attract and retain the best talent in a competitive job market.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
