Introduction:

In the age of social distancing, physical education classes have undergone a transformation. The traditional team sports and close contact activities have been replaced with creative alternatives that allow students to stay active while maintaining a safe distance. Here are 10 fun and safe social distancing PE activities and games that you can incorporate into your classes.

Fitness Circuit:

Set up a fitness circuit with stations that students can rotate through. Include exercises like jumping jacks, squats, burpees, and planks. Each student can perform the exercises individually, ensuring there is enough distance between them.

Yoga and Stretching:

Introduce students to the benefits of yoga and stretching. Teach them various poses and stretches that they can do while maintaining a safe distance. Incorporate soothing music and encourage mindful breathing.

Tennis Baseball:

Adapt the classic game of baseball by replacing the bat and ball with a tennis racket and a foam ball. Set up bases that are spaced out to ensure social distancing. Students can take turns hitting and running bases while maintaining safe distances.

Hula Hoop Challenge:

Create a hula hoop challenge where students must perform different activities within their own hula hoop space. Activities can include jumping jacks, skipping, and performing dance moves. This game promotes coordination and physical activity while maintaining distance.

Obstacle Course:

Design an outdoor obstacle course where students can navigate through various challenges while maintaining social distance. Include activities like hopping over cones, crawling under low bars, and balancing on a beam. The obstacle course can be modified to suit different skill levels.

Nature Walk and Scavenger Hunt:

Take students for a nature walk around the school grounds or nearby park. Provide each student with a scavenger hunt list of items they need to find and observe. This activity promotes physical activity, sensory exploration, and connection with nature.

Individual Time Trials:

Organize individual time trials for activities like running or cycling. Students can compete against themselves, trying to beat their own personal records. Ensure each student starts at a safe distance from others and record their individual times.

Dance Party:

Create a socially distanced dance party where students can groove to their favorite tunes. Mark out individual dance spaces for each student and play upbeat music. Encourage them to express themselves through dance while keeping a safe distance.

Jump Rope Challenge:

Set up a jump rope challenge where students can practice their jump rope skills individually. Create different challenges like jumping for a set amount of time or completing a certain number of jumps. This activity helps improve cardiovascular fitness and coordination.

Mindfulness and Meditation:

Introduce mindfulness and meditation exercises to your PE class. Teach various techniques like deep breathing, guided visualization, and body scans. Encourage students to focus on their breathing and relax their minds, promoting mental well-being.

Conclusion:

With these 10 social distancing PE activities and games, you can keep your students active, engaged, and safe. By adapting traditional PE activities and introducing innovative alternatives, you can create a fun and memorable physical education experience for your students, even during times of social distancing.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
