The I-DREAM (Investing in DREAMs: Education) Grant program is making significant strides in supporting First American students pursuing careers in education. This crucial initiative addresses the critical underrepresentation of First Americans in the teaching profession, fostering a more culturally relevant and inclusive educational environment for future generations.

The grant provides financial assistance, covering tuition, fees, books, and other essential educational expenses. This vital support alleviates the financial burdens often faced by students from underserved communities, allowing them to focus on their studies and future contributions to the field. Beyond financial aid, the I-DREAM program offers comprehensive mentorship and networking opportunities. Successful applicants are paired with experienced educators and leaders within the First American community, providing invaluable guidance and support throughout their academic journey.

This mentorship aspect is particularly impactful, offering insights into the unique challenges and rewards of teaching within First American communities. Mentors can share best practices, discuss culturally responsive teaching strategies, and provide encouragement during challenging times. The networking opportunities extend beyond mentorship, connecting students with potential employers and fostering a strong sense of community among aspiring educators.

The I-DREAM Grant’s impact extends far beyond individual students. By increasing the number of qualified First American teachers, the program directly contributes to improving educational outcomes for students within First American communities. Having teachers who understand and appreciate their cultural backgrounds can significantly enhance student engagement, academic performance, and overall well-being. The program recognizes the importance of culturally relevant pedagogy and actively works to cultivate a teaching force that reflects the diversity of the student population.

The I-DREAM Grant is a vital investment in the future of education, not just for First American students, but for all students. By empowering individuals to pursue their passion for teaching and fostering a more inclusive and representative teaching profession, this initiative is paving the way for a brighter future for generations to come. The success of the I-DREAM program underscores the importance of targeted initiatives in addressing educational disparities and building a more equitable education system for all.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
