Why Are Spanish Students Learning Ancient Greek?

The image of Spanish students grappling with the intricacies of Ancient Greek might seem unusual. After all, the language has no direct connection to Spanish, and its relevance to modern life might seem limited. Yet, across Spain, an increasing number of high schools are offering Ancient Greek as a subject, a trend with roots both in academic and cultural spheres.

Firstly, studying Ancient Greek unlocks a treasure trove of classical literature and philosophy. From Homer’s epic poems to Plato’s dialogues, these works have shaped Western thought and continue to hold profound insights. Learning Ancient Greek allows students to experience these masterpieces firsthand, understanding their nuances and appreciating their enduring legacy.

Beyond literature, Ancient Greek lays the foundation for understanding numerous modern disciplines. From linguistics to medicine, mathematics to law, the influence of Ancient Greek thought and vocabulary is undeniable. By studying the language, students gain a deeper appreciation of these fields and their historical origins.

Moreover, learning Ancient Greek fosters critical thinking skills and enhances language proficiency. The complex grammatical structures and intricate vocabulary challenge students to think analytically and develop a nuanced understanding of language. This exposure can enhance their ability to learn other languages, including Spanish.

Finally, the revival of interest in Ancient Greek reflects a growing desire to connect with cultural roots. As Spain grapples with its complex history and identity, understanding the shared heritage of Western civilization becomes increasingly important. Studying Ancient Greek offers a window into this shared history, fostering a sense of interconnectedness and a deeper appreciation for the diverse tapestry of Western culture.

While Ancient Greek may seem like an unusual choice for Spanish students, it offers a wealth of academic, cultural, and personal benefits. As more schools embrace this ancient language, its influence on Spanish education and culture is likely to continue to grow.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
