The University of Minnesota Libraries has released a powerful new publication, “Dear Higher Education: Letters from the Social Justice Mountain,” a collection of personal essays that challenge and inspire the academic community. This anthology, edited by University of Minnesota faculty members Dr. Sarah Marie Wiehe and Dr. Sarah E. Tracy, offers a poignant and insightful exploration of the complexities of social justice in higher education.

The essays, written by students, faculty, staff, and alumni, delve into diverse experiences within the university system, from navigating systemic racism and gender inequality to fostering inclusive learning environments and promoting social change. They reflect on personal journeys of struggle, resilience, and activism, offering a raw and authentic perspective on the challenges and possibilities of pursuing social justice within academia.

“This collection is a powerful reminder that the pursuit of social justice is not a spectator sport,” said Dr. Wiehe. “It demands our active engagement and commitment to creating a more equitable and just world.”

The book is a call to action for the entire higher education community. It encourages readers to confront uncomfortable truths, engage in critical dialogue, and take meaningful steps to address systemic inequalities.

“Dear Higher Education: Letters from the Social Justice Mountain” serves as a valuable resource for students, faculty, and administrators seeking to understand the complexities of social justice in higher education. It is available for purchase online and at the University of Minnesota Libraries.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
