Manhattan College Becomes Manhattan University in Fall 2024

In a landmark decision, Manhattan College has officially announced its transition to Manhattan University, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s 170-year history. This change reflects the school’s growth and evolution in academic offerings and institutional status.

The transition, set to take effect in the fall of 2024, comes after years of careful consideration and strategic planning. Dr. Milo Riverso, Chair of the Board of Trustees, stated, “This change to university status is a natural progression that accurately represents the breadth and depth of our academic programs, research initiatives, and global impact.”

Founded in 1853, Manhattan College has long been a cornerstone of higher education in New York City. Despite its “college” designation, the institution has offered graduate programs for decades and has continually expanded its academic portfolio across various disciplines.

For current students and alumni, this change brings both excitement and questions. The administration assures that degrees previously awarded under the Manhattan College name will remain valid and equally respected. Future graduates will receive diplomas bearing the Manhattan University name, symbolizing the institution’s enhanced status in the academic world.

This transition is expected to boost the school’s international recognition and appeal to prospective students. It also aligns Manhattan with peer institutions that have made similar changes in recent years, reflecting a broader trend in higher education.

As Manhattan University embarks on this new chapter, it reaffirms its commitment to its Lasallian Catholic heritage while embracing a future of expanded opportunities and global influence. This name change not only honors the institution’s rich history but also positions it for continued growth and excellence in the years to come.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
