Attention, aspiring legal academics! Are you ready to trade your combat boots for a tweed jacket? Transitioning from military law practice to the hallowed halls of academia is no small feat, but with the right strategy, you can successfully navigate this challenging terrain.

Prepare for a Different Kind of Battle

Your military background has equipped you with discipline, leadership, and a unique perspective on the law. Now it’s time to redirect these skills towards scholarly pursuits. Here’s your mission brief for a successful transition:

1. Develop Your Scholarly Arsenal: Start building your academic credentials before leaving practice. Publish articles in law reviews or military law journals. This demonstrates your ability to contribute to legal scholarship.

2. Reconnaissance is Key: Research the academic job market thoroughly. Understand the expectations for entry-level law professors, including teaching experience, publication history, and advanced degrees.

3. Form Strategic Alliances: Network with current law professors, especially those with military backgrounds. Their insights and potential mentorship are invaluable for your academic campaign.

4. Master a New Chain of Command: Familiarize yourself with the hierarchy and politics of academia. It’s a different world from the military, with its own unwritten rules and expectations.

5. Prepare for a Long Deployment: The path to becoming a law professor can be lengthy. Be prepared for potential pit stops, such as pursuing an LL.M. or Ph.D., or taking on a visiting assistant professor role.

Remember, transitioning to academia is not about abandoning your military experience-it’s about leveraging it. Your unique perspective can bring fresh insights to legal education and scholarship.

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll dive deeper into specific strategies for securing that coveted faculty position. Until then, start mapping out your battle plan for academic success!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
