I’m A Hip Surgeon. Here’s The 1 Thing I’d Never Do If I Have Hip Pain

It’s a question I get asked every day: “Doctor, I have hip pain. Should I get a hip replacement?”

My answer is always the same: don’t rush into surgery. As a hip surgeon, I see firsthand the incredible relief that a hip replacement can provide. But, it’s not a magic bullet. It’s a major procedure, and it should always be a last resort.

Here’s the thing: hip pain can be caused by a multitude of factors, from simple muscle strains to osteoarthritis. Many patients can experience significant improvement with conservative treatment like:

Physical therapy: Strengthening exercises and stretches can improve flexibility, range of motion, and reduce pain.

Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers or prescription anti-inflammatories can help manage pain and inflammation.

Lifestyle modifications: Weight management, avoiding high-impact activities, and using assistive devices can reduce stress on the hip joint.

Injections: Corticosteroid injections can provide temporary pain relief, but they are not a long-term solution.

If you’re experiencing hip pain, don’t jump to the conclusion that you need surgery. Instead, I urge you to seek a comprehensive evaluation from a medical professional. They will be able to pinpoint the underlying cause of your pain and guide you towards the most appropriate treatment.

Here’s why I would never rush into surgery myself:

Recovery time: Hip replacement surgery involves a significant recovery period, which can be challenging and demanding. It requires patience, dedication, and physical therapy.

Risks: Like any surgery, hip replacements carry risks, including infection, blood clots, and implant failure.

Alternatives: There are often non-surgical options available that can provide significant relief and improve quality of life.

Of course, if conservative treatment fails and your pain is severe and debilitating, then surgery may be the right choice for you. But, it should always be a last resort, not a first line of action.

Remember, your health is your priority. Don’t let fear or misinformation lead you down the wrong path. Take the time to explore all treatment options and make informed decisions based on your individual needs and circumstances.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
