Introduction:

“This is Us” is a popular, heartwarming television series that has resonated with audiences across generations. Among its many subplots and emotional storylines, the show also shares valuable insights on teaching high school. This article will outline 10 of these truths, as observed and learned from the characters and situations portrayed in the series.

1. Building Relationships is Key

As seen in “This is Us,” building strong relationships with students fosters a positive classroom environment and enables more effective learning. Connecting with students on a personal level helps create a sense of trust and respect between teacher and student which has a lasting effect on their overall school experience.

2. Patience is Essential

Teaching high school can be challenging; therefore, patience is crucial. Handling different personalities, individual learning styles, and coping with daily struggles require teachers to remain calm and collected while maintaining important boundaries.

3. Flexibility Makes a Difference

As depicted in the series, teachers need to adapt to change – be it adjusting lesson plans or revising teaching methods. Embracing flexibility keeps them prepared for unforeseen circumstances and ensures they continue to deliver quality education.

4. Emotional Support Matters

Just like the Pearson family in “This is Us,” high school students experience ups and downs in their lives too. Teachers must empathize with their students’ emotional needs by providing support, guidance, and showing genuine care outside of academics.

5. Encourage Independence

Teaching students to think critically and independently helps prepare them for life’s uncertainties. Providing opportunities for individual growth empowers students to take charge of their futures.

6. Communication Skills are Vital

Teachers must hone their communication skills not only to get course material across but to facilitate meaningful conversations among peers as well as engage parents and colleagues actively.

7. Recognize Small Achievements

Acknowledging even minor milestones can bolster students’ motivation. Positive reinforcement strengthens self-esteem and inspires efforts toward further improvement.

8. Teaching goes Beyond the Classroom

“This is Us” conveys the importance of extracurricular activities in personal development. Athletics, arts, and other outside clubs provide opportunities for students to discover new passions, develop teamwork, and cultivate character.

9. Adaptability Fosters Resilience

The show teaches that life is unpredictable, and adaptability is essential for teachers and students alike. This skill helps them overcome challenges with agility and strength – a lesson directly applicable to the classroom.

10. Balance is Necessary

As the Pearson family strives to maintain harmony in their lives, high school teachers must do so too. Establishing a balance between work and personal life will promote greater productivity and better overall well-being.

Conclusion:

Based on these key points from “This is Us,” it’s clear that teaching high school involves far more than just instructing classes. Teachers must continuously learn and evolve alongside their students, nurturing empathy and interpersonal skills to create a thriving learning environment in which everyone can flourish.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
