5 Things I Am Giving Up This School Year

: Embracing Positive Change for Growth

As the new school year approaches, many students reflect on their previous experiences and consider what changes they would like to make. This year, I have decided to adopt a more intentional approach to my personal development. In this article, I will outline the five things I am giving up this school year. These changes are not merely about sacrifice but rather about creating space for growth, productivity, and positive mental health.

Letting Go of Procrastination: The Path to Productivity

One of the most significant habits I am giving up this school year is procrastination. Throughout my academic journey, I have often found myself putting off assignments until the last minute or delaying studying for exams, which ultimately led to unnecessary stress and subpar performance.

This year, I plan to implement a structured schedule that allocates specific times for studying, completing assignments, and reviewing material. By breaking tasks into manageable chunks and setting clear deadlines, I can avoid the last-minute rush that often accompanies procrastination.

To support this change, I will also prioritize a productive workspace free from distractions. This means limiting social media usage and creating a dedicated study area that promotes focus and concentration. By letting go of procrastination, I am embracing a more organized and efficient approach to my studies.

Negativity: Cultivating a Positive Mindset

Another major change I am making this school year is to let go of negativity. This encompasses not only negative thoughts but also toxic relationships that do not contribute positively to my life.

Negative self-talk has often hindered my confidence and motivation. I have come to realize the importance of fostering a supportive internal dialogue. This school year, I aim to replace negative thoughts with affirmations and constructive self-talk that encourages me to strive for excellence.

Additionally, I will assess my social circles and distance myself from individuals who drain my energy or contribute to a negative atmosphere. Surrounding myself with positive, uplifting people will not only enhance my mood but also inspire me to achieve my goals. By focusing on positivity, I can create an environment conducive to growth and success.

Perfectionism: Embracing Mistakes as Learning Opportunities

Perfectionism is a mindset that has plagued me for years, leading to anxiety and fear of failure. This school year, I am letting go of the need to be perfect. I have learned that mistakes are an essential part of the learning process and that striving for perfection often results in missed opportunities.

Instead of fearing failure, I will embrace it as a valuable teacher. Whether it’s a poor grade on an assignment or a project that didn’t go as planned, I will analyze my mistakes to understand what went wrong and how I can improve in the future.

This shift in perspective will allow me to take more risks, participate more actively in class discussions, and engage in extracurricular activities without the constant fear of not meeting unrealistic standards. By letting go of perfectionism, I am freeing myself to explore my passions and interests more fully.

Overcommitment: Prioritizing What Truly Matters

In the past, I have often found myself overcommitting to various activities, clubs, and responsibilities, leading to burnout and a lack of focus on my academic goals. This year, I am giving up the habit of saying “yes” to everything that comes my way.

Instead, I will take a more selective approach to my commitments. I plan to assess each opportunity carefully, considering how it aligns with my interests, values, and long-term goals.

By prioritizing quality over quantity, I can dedicate more time and energy to the activities that truly matter to me. This will not only enhance my academic performance but also allow me to enjoy my extracurricular involvement without feeling overwhelmed. Learning to say “no” when necessary will be a crucial part of this transformation.

Self-Doubt: Building Confidence Through Action

Finally, I am letting go of self-doubt this school year. For too long, I have allowed insecurity to dictate my decisions and hinder my potential. Whether it’s hesitating to speak up in class or doubting my abilities in various subjects, self-doubt has held me back.

To combat this, I will focus on building my confidence through action. Instead of dwelling on what I might not achieve, I will take proactive steps toward my goals. This includes seeking help when needed, participating in study groups, and engaging with teachers to clarify concepts I find challenging.

I will also celebrate my accomplishments, no matter how small, to reinforce a positive self-image. By recognizing my progress and capabilities, I can gradually diminish the hold of self-doubt over my life.

Conclusion: Embracing Positive Change for a Successful Year

As I embark on this school year, the five things I am giving up represent a commitment to personal growth and a more fulfilling academic journey. By letting go of procrastination, negative self-talk, excessive social media use, mindless information consumption, and taking things for granted, I am making space for positivity, focus, and gratitude in my life. This intentional shift will not only enhance my educational experience but also contribute to my overall well-being.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
