: Unlocking the Potential of a Digital Learning Tool

Introduction: The Versatility of Seesaw in Education

In the evolving landscape of education, technology plays a pivotal role in enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. Among the plethora of digital tools available, Seesaw stands out as a unique platform designed to facilitate interactive learning experiences. While many educators are familiar with its basic functionalities, such as creating assignments and sharing student work, Seesaw offers a wealth of surprising features that can transform the teaching and learning experience. This article will explore five unexpected ways educators and students can leverage Seesaw to maximize its potential and foster creativity, collaboration, and deeper understanding.

Innovative Assessment: Moving Beyond Traditional Methods

One of the most surprising and impactful uses of Seesaw is its capability for innovative assessment. Educators can utilize the platform to conduct formative assessments that go beyond standard quizzes or tests.

Multimedia Responses: Students can respond to prompts using a variety of formats, including videos, audio recordings, and images. This allows them to express their understanding in a way that feels authentic and personal.

Peer Feedback: Seesaw enables students to share their work with classmates, who can provide constructive feedback. This peer assessment process encourages collaboration and critical thinking, as students learn to evaluate their peers’ work and articulate their thoughts effectively.

Data Tracking: Educators can track student progress over time using Seesaw’s built-in analytics. By monitoring the types of assignments completed and the feedback provided, teachers can gain valuable insights into student learning trends and make informed instructional decisions.

Creative Expression: Encouraging Artistic Skills in Students

Seesaw is not just a platform for academic assignments; it can also serve as a canvas for creative expression. Educators can use the platform to encourage students to explore their artistic abilities through various projects.

Digital Art Projects: Students can create digital artwork using drawing tools available in Seesaw. This feature allows them to experiment with colors, shapes, and designs, fostering creativity and self-expression.

Storytelling: With Seesaw, students can combine images, text, and audio to create multimedia stories. This approach not only enhances their storytelling skills but also integrates technology into the creative process, making learning more engaging.

Art Exhibitions: Teachers can organize virtual art exhibitions where students showcase their creative projects. This not only motivates students to produce high-quality work but also instills a sense of pride and accomplishment in their efforts.

Parent Engagement: Building a Home-School Connection

Another surprising aspect of Seesaw is its potential to enhance parent engagement in the learning process. By providing a platform for communication and collaboration, Seesaw fosters a strong home-school connection.

Regular Updates: Teachers can post updates about classroom activities, assignments, and events. Parents can access this information easily, keeping them informed about their child’s learning journey.

Showcasing Student Work: Seesaw allows students to share their work with their families. Parents can view their child’s progress and celebrate their achievements, reinforcing the importance of their involvement in education.

Feedback Opportunities: Educators can invite parents to provide feedback on their child’s work or participate in discussions. This two-way communication strengthens relationships and encourages parents to take an active role in their child’s education.

Collaboration: Fostering a Community of Learners

Seesaw also serves as a powerful tool for collaboration, encouraging students to work together and learn from one another. This collaborative aspect can be surprising to those who view Seesaw solely as an individual assignment platform.

Group Projects: Teachers can assign group projects where students collaborate on a single Seesaw post. By working together, students develop teamwork skills and learn to appreciate diverse perspectives, enhancing their overall learning experience.

Discussion Boards: Educators can create discussion boards within Seesaw where students can pose questions and share ideas. This interactive platform allows for rich conversations and collaborative problem-solving, fostering a community of learners.

Cross-Classroom Collaboration: Seesaw can connect classrooms from different schools or even countries. This global collaboration exposes students to new ideas and cultures, enriching their educational experience and broadening their horizons.

Reflection: Encouraging Metacognition and Self-Assessment

Lastly, Seesaw provides opportunities for reflection, an often-overlooked component of the learning process. Encouraging students to reflect on their learning helps develop metacognitive skills, enabling them to become more self-aware and independent learners.

Learning Journals: Educators can prompt students to maintain a digital learning journal within Seesaw. By regularly reflecting on their learning experiences, students can identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.

Goal Setting: Seesaw allows students to set personal learning goals and track their progress. This practice encourages ownership of their learning and fosters a growth mindset, empowering them to take charge of their educational journey.

Feedback Reflection: After receiving feedback from peers or teachers, students can reflect on the comments and consider how to apply them to future work. This process encourages continuous improvement and helps students develop a deeper understanding of their learning.Extending Learning: Utilizing Seesaw for Extended Learning Opportunities

One of the more unexpected uses of Seesaw is its potential to support extended learning beyond the classroom environment. By leveraging its features, educators can create opportunities for students to engage with content in a meaningful way outside of school hours.

Homework Assignments: Seesaw can transform traditional homework assignments into interactive experiences. Instead of merely completing worksheets, students can record videos or create presentations that demonstrate their understanding of a given topic. This interactive approach promotes deeper engagement and allows students to showcase their knowledge creatively.

Flipped Classroom Model: Educators can utilize Seesaw to implement a flipped classroom model, where students access instructional materials at home and engage in hands-on activities in class. Teachers can post instructional videos or resources on Seesaw, enabling students to familiarize themselves with the content before the lesson. This model encourages active participation and allows for more personalized, in-depth exploration of topics during classroom time.

Research Projects: Seesaw can act as a hub for students working on research projects. They can compile their findings, share resources, and receive feedback from peers and teachers throughout the research process. This collaboration not only enhances their understanding of the subject matter but also teaches valuable research and presentation skills.

Professional Development: Empowering Educators with Seesaw

While Seesaw is primarily designed for students, educators can also harness its capabilities for their professional development. Surprisingly, this platform can be an effective tool for teachers to enhance their skills and collaborate with colleagues.

Resource Sharing: Teachers can create a dedicated space on Seesaw to share teaching resources, lesson plans, and best practices with their peers. By collaborating in this way, educators can learn from each other’s experiences and improve their instructional strategies.

Reflective Practice: Just as students benefit from reflection, educators can use Seesaw to document their teaching experiences. By posting reflections on their lessons, teachers can assess what worked well and what could be improved. This practice promotes a growth mindset among educators, encouraging them to continually refine their teaching methods.

Professional Learning Communities: Seesaw can facilitate the creation of professional learning communities where educators can connect, share ideas, and engage in collaborative learning. By hosting discussions and sharing insights, teachers can foster a supportive network that enhances their professional growth.

Language Learning: Enhancing Language Acquisition Through Seesaw

Seesaw also presents unique opportunities for language learning, allowing students to practice and develop their language skills in an engaging and interactive environment. This unexpected application can significantly enhance language acquisition.

Language Journals: Students learning a new language can use Seesaw to maintain a digital language journal. They can record their pronunciation, create dialogues, or write reflections in the target language. This consistent practice not only builds language skills but also boosts confidence in using the language.

Peer Conversations: Seesaw allows students to engage in peer conversations recorded as audio or video. By practicing speaking with classmates, students can enhance their conversational skills and receive immediate feedback from their peers. This collaborative practice encourages language fluency and understanding.

Cultural Exchange: Seesaw can facilitate cultural exchange projects where students share aspects of their cultures in the target language. By presenting on their traditions, food, or celebrations, students not only practice their language skills but also learn about the diverse backgrounds of their classmates, fostering cultural awareness and appreciation.

Connecting with Experts: Engaging with Real-World Applications

Another surprising feature of Seesaw is its ability to connect students with experts in various fields, providing real-world context to their learning experiences. This engagement can significantly enrich the educational process.

Guest Speakers: Educators can invite guest speakers to participate in Seesaw by sharing pre-recorded messages or joining live sessions. This connection allows students to interact with professionals in their areas of interest, providing insights that cannot be gained solely from textbooks.

Virtual Field Trips: Seesaw can be used to facilitate virtual field trips, where students can explore different locations and experiences through curated content. Teachers can post videos or articles about various sites, enabling students to gain knowledge about the world beyond their classroom.

Expert Feedback: Students can share their projects with experts in relevant fields to receive constructive feedback. This interaction not only helps students improve their work but also motivates them to strive for excellence, knowing that their efforts are being evaluated by professionals.

By exploring these five surprising uses of Seesaw, educators can unlock a treasure trove of opportunities that go beyond traditional teaching methods. The platform’s versatility enables it to cater to a wide range of educational needs, fostering creativity, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of content. Whether it’s through innovative assessments, creative expression, parent engagement, collaborative learning, or reflective practices, Seesaw proves to be an invaluable tool in the modern classroom. Conclusion: Embracing the Versatility of Seesaw

In summary, Seesaw offers a myriad of surprising applications that can enhance the educational experience for both students and teachers. From innovative assessments to fostering family engagement, the platform empowers creative expression and collaborative learning. By integrating these unique features into their teaching practices, educators can create a dynamic and interactive learning environment that truly resonates with students.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
