5 Active Learning Games That Teach Language Arts Skills

Introduction:

Language arts skills are fundamental for a child’s development. Engaging them in active learning games can make the process fun and effective. Here are five exciting games that can help your child enhance their language arts skills.

Word relay race:

Gather a group of children and form two teams. Each team stands in a line, with an adult holding a stack of vocabulary cards at the front. The first player runs to the adult, selects a card, reads the word aloud, and passes it on to the next player. This continues until the last player in each team holds a card. The team that finishes first wins. This game strengthens vocabulary and reading skills.

Spelling puzzle challenge:

Create a set of word puzzles by writing words vertically and splitting them into individual letters. Mix the letters and challenge your child to reassemble them to form the correct word. Make it more exciting by setting a timer. This game improves spelling and problem-solving abilities.

Storytelling dice:

Prepare a set of story dice by drawing different pictures on each side of a large die. Sit in a circle and roll the dice. Each player takes turns incorporating the picture they rolled into an ongoing story. Encourage imaginative thinking and creativity. This game enhances narrative and language skills.

Sentence building relay:

Divide the children into teams and provide each team with a set of sentence cards. The first player selects a card and quickly forms a sentence using the words. They then pass the card to the next player, who continues the sentence by adding another card. The relay continues until all players have contributed to the sentence. This game strengthens grammar, sentence structure, and cooperation.

Category charades:

Write different categories, such as animals, professions, or food, on individual cards. Each player selects a card and silently acts out the word while others guess the category. This game improves vocabulary, creativity, and communication skills.

Conclusion:

Active learning games are an excellent way to make language arts skills development enjoyable for children. The five games mentioned above – word relay race, spelling puzzle challenge, storytelling dice, sentence building relay, and category charades – provide engaging and effective ways to enhance vocabulary, reading, spelling, grammar, storytelling, and communication skills. Incorporate these games into your child’s learning routine and watch their language arts abilities flourish.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
