1. Storage bins: Use milk crates to organize and store books, art supplies, or other classroom materials. Arrange them in different sections of the classroom for easy access.

2. Seats: Turn milk crates upside down and add a cushion to create additional seating options for students. These can be used in reading corners or group work areas.

3. Bookshelves: Stack milk crates horizontally or vertically to create unique bookshelves. Arrange them in a pattern or line them up along a wall to display books for students.

4. Cubby system: Attach milk crates to a wooden board or wall to create a cubby system for students to store their belongings. Label each crate with a student’s name for easy organization.

5. Display podium: Stack a few milk crates and place a sturdy board on top to create a display podium for student presentations or project showcases.

6. Art supply caddy: Use a milk crate to store and organize art supplies, such as paintbrushes, markers, and crayons. Add dividers or small containers for better organization.

7. Sensory bin holder: Fill a milk crate with sand, rice, or any sensory materials to create a sensory bin for hands-on learning experiences. The milk crate keeps the materials contained.

8. STEM station: Use milk crates to create a dedicated STEM station where students can experiment and build structures using different materials, such as blocks or LEGOs.

9. Classroom garden: Turn milk crates into mini planters for a classroom garden. Fill them with soil and plant various herbs, flowers, or vegetables for students to care for and observe.

10. Puppet theater: Arrange milk crates to create a puppet theater by attaching curtains or fabric to the sides. Students can use the theater for storytelling or performances.

11. Magazine rack: Line up milk crates horizontally and use them as magazine racks. Students can browse and read different magazines during free reading time.

12. Recycling bins: Assign milk crates as recycling bins for paper, plastic, and other recyclable materials. Teach students about the importance of recycling and proper waste disposal.

13. Locker organization: Attach milk crates to the inside of lockers to create additional compartments for students to store and organize their books and belongings.

14. Game storage: Keep board games and puzzles organized by using milk crates as storage bins. Label each crate with the game or puzzle name for easy retrieval.

15. Science experiment holder: Use milk crates to hold various science experiment materials, such as test tubes, magnifying glasses, or microscopes. Each crate can have specific experiment supplies.

16. Classroom divider: Create a makeshift classroom divider by arranging milk crates in a line or pattern. This can be useful for creating separate learning spaces or for privacy during assessments.

17. Music station: Stack milk crates to create a music station where students can access musical instruments, such as drums, shakers, or recorders. Encourage creativity and rhythm exploration.

18. STEAM storage: Designate a milk crate for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) materials and supplies. This can include items like circuits, craft materials, and building blocks.

19. Mailboxes: Assign each student a milk crate as their personal mailbox. This is a great way to distribute handouts, homework, and other classroom correspondence.

20. Flex seating: Arrange milk crates in different areas of the classroom to offer flexible seating options. Students can use them as stools or additional workspaces.

These are just a few ideas for creatively using milk crates in your classroom. Get creative and explore other ways to repurpose these versatile containers to enhance the learning environment for your students!

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
