In recent years, fidget toys and devices have gained popularity as tools to help students with focusing and concentration in the classroom. These small gadgets are specifically designed to provide sensory stimulation and occupy the hands, which can help students channel their excess energy and improve their ability to stay focused. If you’re a teacher or a parent looking for classroom-friendly fidget toys, here are fourteen options to consider:

1. Fidget Spinners: These spinning toys gained massive popularity a few years ago and are still widely used. They provide a hands-on sensory experience and can help students relax and concentrate during lessons.

2. Tangle Toys: Tangle toys are a series of interconnected plastic pieces that can be twisted and turned into various shapes. They provide a tactile experience and can be beneficial for students who like to fidget with their hands.

3. Koosh Balls: Koosh balls are soft rubber balls with rubber strands attached to them. They are squishy and can be a great option for students who need to release tension or improve fine motor skills.

4. Fidget Cubes: Fidget cubes are small handheld devices with different activities on each side, such as buttons, switches, and sliders. They offer a variety of sensory experiences and can be effective in promoting focus and relaxation.

5. Tactile Discs: Tactile discs are flat, textured surfaces that provide sensory input through touch. They can be used as a seat cushion or placed on a student’s desk to facilitate focus and provide a calming sensation.

6. Stress Balls: Stress balls are small, squeezable balls that can help relieve tension and stress. Students can discreetly use them under their desks or during quiet times to improve concentration.

7. Kinetic Sand: Kinetic sand is a moldable sand-like substance that sticks together, allowing students to shape and sculpt. It provides a sensory experience and can be useful for students who benefit from tactile stimulation.

8. Chewable Necklaces: Chewable necklaces are wearable necklaces made of safe, non-toxic materials that students can chew on. They serve as a sensory outlet and can help reduce anxiety and improve focus.

9. Pencil Toppers: Pencil toppers are small attachments that can be placed on the end of a pencil. They give students something to fidget with during class, promoting focus and preventing distractions.

10. Wobble Cushions: Wobble cushions are inflatable cushions that provide an unstable seating surface. They encourage students to engage their core muscles while sitting, which can help improve posture and attention.

11. Velcro Strips: Velcro strips can be applied to a student’s desk or chair, providing a tactile surface for fidgeting. Students can engage with the velcro by pressing or pulling on it, helping them stay focused.

12. Fidget Bands: Fidget bands are stretchy bands that can be attached to the front chair legs. They allow students to bounce or kick their feet discreetly, providing a physical outlet without causing disruptions.

13. Resistance Bands: Resistance bands can be looped around the legs of a chair to give students something to engage with while sitting. They offer a quiet, flexible alternative to traditional fidget toys.

14. Noise-Canceling Headphones: For students who struggle with auditory distractions, noise-canceling headphones can be beneficial. They can help block out unwanted noise and create a more focused learning environment.

Remember, not all fidget toys and devices work for everyone. It’s essential to provide a variety of options and allow students to choose what works best for them. Fidget toys should be used in a way that does not disrupt the learning environment or distract other students.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
