Iowa City, Iowa – The University of Iowa has reached a settlement with the former Human Resources Director of its largest college, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, who resigned in 2022 amid allegations of misconduct.

The settlement, which was finalized last week, includes a financial payout to the former director, [Name withheld], but does not disclose the specific amount. The university also agreed to issue a statement acknowledging the concerns raised by [Name withheld] regarding the university’s workplace culture and practices.

[Name withheld] resigned in [Month] 2022 after [briefly summarize the allegations against them, without naming accusers]. The resignation came shortly after a group of employees within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences expressed concerns about the work environment and alleged that [Name withheld] had created a hostile work environment.

The university launched an investigation into the allegations, but the findings of that investigation remain confidential.

The settlement comes as the university continues to grapple with concerns about its workplace culture. In recent years, several faculty and staff members have raised concerns about issues such as harassment, discrimination, and retaliation.

The university has taken some steps to address these concerns, including implementing new policies and training programs. However, critics argue that the university has not done enough to create a truly inclusive and supportive work environment.

In a statement released last week, the university acknowledged the settlement and stated its commitment to fostering a positive and respectful workplace.

“We are committed to creating a work environment where all members of our community feel safe, valued, and respected,” the statement read. “We continue to invest in resources and training to ensure that our policies and practices support this commitment.”

The settlement with [Name withheld] is the latest development in a series of incidents that have raised questions about the university’s commitment to creating a positive work environment. The university faces a challenging task in addressing these concerns and ensuring that its workplace is truly inclusive and supportive for all members of its community.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
