Spread the love

Halloween is usually an exciting and unique time of the year. We dress in funny costumes and partake in nice treats. Halloween wouldn’t be complete either without some good stories shared. Below are some Halloween books for kids of all ages who like scary events.

  1. Pig the Monster by Aaron Blabey

In this new episode of the “Pig the Pug” series, Pig goes on an extreme search for treats. This story will get your class giggling all along.

  1. The Good, the Bad, and the Spooky by Jory John and Pete Oswald

If your students are interested in the “Food Group” series like we do, this Halloween story is a no-brainer to place in your classroom library. The tale tells of Bad Seed, who goes on a search for the ideal Halloween costumes.

  1. Halloween Is Coming! by Cal Everett

The things to admire in this ode to Halloween are the lovely illustrations and lyrical text used.

  1. Hardly Haunted by Jesse Sima

This tale speaks about self-acceptance. There’s an old house girl who wants others to love her, even when she’s disturbed.

  1. Creepy Carrots! by Aaron Reynolds

Jasper Rabbit is a carrot addict, especially Crackenhopper Field carrots. He’s fond of eating them on his way to school and walking home. He couldn’t help it.

  1. That Monster on the Block by Sue Ganz-Schmitt and Luke Flowers

Monster is happy to see who’s next to move into Vampire’s old apartment. He already practices his welcome growl for the possible new neighbor. But when the new neighbor would appear, it happened that it wasn’t who Monster least expected. Rather it was a dreadful sight for Mister to imagine.

  1. Skulls! by Blair Thornburgh

This clever and cheerful story dissipates any kid’s prior fears about skeletons.

  1. The Pomegranate Witch by Denise Doyen

The neighborhood kid’s mouth swelled with anticipation when a scary old tree blossomed with the most adorable pomegranates. However, the tree isn’t theirs and has a protector. Then starts the Pomegranates battle.

  1. Pick a Pumpkin by Patricia Toht

Choose a pumpkin from the patch. It could be tall, short, fat, or lean. It could be clear orange, speckled green, or ghostly white might be the right call.

  1. The Short Straw by Irene Mathis

Having the short straw has its advantages, so writing this story in verse is no exception. Anyone who gets the short straw must go into the haunted house. Beware!

  1. Creepy Pair of Underwear! by Aaron Reynolds

Look who is not a little bunny anymore, Jasper Rabbit! He’s not scared of something as odd as underwear. Although when the light went out, his new rabbit underwear suddenly shone in the bright light. Having tried all to get them over, why do they still appear?

  1. Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman

The biggest pumpkin ever was grown by the witch. She then wants to make out of it a pumpkin pie for Halloween– Oops! It’s too big for her to get it off the vine.

  1. Flashlight Night by Matt Forest Esenwine

Three kids use a flashlight to see a path within their backyard at night; right in the flashlight’s beam, there is another world.

  1. Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler

After the wind had blown off a witch’s hat, wand, and now, three caring animals helped find the missing items. To return the favor, they all want to ride on her broom– Can the broom accommodate the three friends.

  1. Pumpkin Countdown by Joan Holub and Jan Smith

The perfect way to celebrate fall is to take a trip to the pumpkin patch! The class counts all in sight, from 20 name tags on coats to the last pumpkin song.

  1. Bone Soup by Cambria Evans

Finnigan is always eating with his eating stool, his eating spoon, and his big eating mouth– but of course, no one wants to share a meal with him. Can Finnigan mount a cauldron’s worth of Halloween magic with his brains and a special ingredient?

  1. Leo: A Ghost Story by Mac Barnett

Leo enjoys drawing, prepares delicious snacks, and virtually all can’t see him– why? Because Leo is also a ghost.

  1. Splat the Cat and the Pumpkin-Picking Plan by Catherine Hapka and Loryn Brantz

Splat attends the pumpkin patch with Seymour, who has vowed to find the biggest pumpkin ever. But when I would, he discovered that the real deal isn’t just the pumpkin picking. Rather it’s how to get it home.

  1. Stumpkin by Lucy Ruth Cummins

Lumpkin is arguably the most handsome pumpkin on the block. He’s the best choice for a Halloween jack-o-lantern. But a challenge with him is that he has a stump, not a stem. And no one desires a stemless jack-o’-lantern for their windows.

  1. The Scariest Book Ever by Bob Shea

Readers hope you’re prepared to see this! This is the most dreadful book ever, as its dramatic ghost narrator alleges it. Go ahead and read on, but don’t expect him to read with you.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
