Expert Perspectives on Math Apps

To further understand the impact of these apps, we reached out to educators and experts in mathematics education. Here are some insights:

Dr. Emily Thompson, a math education researcher, mentions, “Apps like Photomath can serve as excellent supplementary tools, especially for students who may feel anxious about math. They provide immediate feedback, which is crucial for learning.” She emphasizes the importance of not relying solely on these tools but using them to enhance understanding. (See: U.S. Department of Education on technology.)

Meanwhile, Mr. James Lee, a middle school math teacher, notes, “Gamified platforms like Prodigy Math can significantly increase engagement among younger students. When they see math as a game, their motivation skyrockets.” His students often report enjoying math homework more when it’s part of a game.

Statistics and Trends in Math App Usage

The use of educational apps has grown tremendously in recent years. According to a report by Statista in 2023, educational apps are among the top downloaded categories on mobile devices, with over 300 million downloads in the last year alone. Specifically, math apps have seen a 45% increase in downloads, reflecting a growing interest in digital learning tools.

Moreover, a survey conducted by Education Week found that nearly 70% of teachers incorporate mobile apps into their teaching strategies, with math apps being the most commonly used. This trend indicates that educators recognize the value of technology in enhancing learning and addressing diverse student needs.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
