Introduction: Exploring the Family-Friendly Side of Big Bear

Big Bear Lake, nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California, is a year-round destination that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and exciting activities for families. Known for its stunning lake views, majestic mountains, and abundance of outdoor adventures, Big Bear is an ideal spot for families seeking memorable experiences together. Whether you visit in the summer for hiking and boating or in the winter for skiing and snowboarding, there’s no shortage of fun activities to engage children of all ages. In this article, we’ll explore 11 family-friendly activities that will keep your kids entertained and create lasting memories during your visit to Big Bear.

Outdoor Adventures: Embracing Nature as a Family

Hiking Trails: Discovering Scenic Routes

Big Bear offers numerous hiking trails suitable for families and young children. One of the most popular trails is the Woodland Trail, which features a gentle incline and is approximately 2.5 miles long. The trail meanders through pine forests and offers beautiful views of the lake, making it a perfect outing for families looking to explore nature together.

For a more challenging adventure, the Castle Rock Trail is another great option. This trail leads to a stunning viewpoint overlooking the lake and is about a mile long. With rock formations and breathtaking scenery, both trails provide excellent opportunities for children to learn about the local flora and fauna while enjoying the great outdoors.

Lake Activities: Fun on the Water

Big Bear Lake is a hub of activity, especially during the warmer months. Families can indulge in a variety of water sports including kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. Kayak rentals are available for families who want to explore the tranquil waters together. With life jackets provided, even younger kids can enjoy a safe day on the lake.

For those interested in fishing, Big Bear Lake is home to various species, including trout and bass. Families can rent fishing gear or join a guided fishing tour, creating an enjoyable and educational experience for children who wish to learn about fishing techniques and local wildlife.

Mountain Biking: Thrills for the Whole Family

Big Bear is renowned for its mountain biking trails, offering something for all skill levels. Families can rent bikes and explore the forested paths that wind through the picturesque landscape. The Snow Summit Bike Park features a variety of trails, including beginner-friendly options, where children can learn the basics of mountain biking while surrounded by stunning mountain views.

For younger children or those who prefer a more leisurely ride, the Alpine Pedal Path is an excellent choice. This flat, paved path runs along the lake and is perfect for families with toddlers or those looking to enjoy a scenic ride at a relaxed pace.

Winter Sports: Embracing the Snowy Wonderland

Skiing and Snowboarding: Thrilling Winter Adventures

During the winter months, Big Bear transforms into a snowy paradise. Families can hit the slopes at Bear Mountain and Snow Summit, where ski and snowboard lessons are available for all ages. Both resorts offer beginner-friendly slopes, making it easy for kids to learn and enjoy the thrill of gliding down the mountain.

For families with younger children or those looking for a more relaxed experience, tubing at the Big Bear Snow Play area is a must. Kids can slide down the specially designed hills in inflatable tubes, providing hours of laughter and fun in the snow.

Sledding: Simple Joys of Winter

Sledding is a classic winter activity that families can enjoy together. Big Bear has several designated sledding areas, such as the popular Magic Mountain Snow Play. Here, families can rent sleds and spend the day racing down the hills, building snowmen, and enjoying the fresh mountain air.

Sledding provides an excellent opportunity for family bonding, as parents can join in the fun, reliving their childhood while creating joyful memories with their children.

Indoor Activities: Fun When the Weather Doesn’t Cooperate

Big Bear Alpine Zoo: An Educational Experience

For families looking for indoor activities, the Big Bear Alpine Zoo offers an engaging and educational experience. Home to a variety of native wildlife, the zoo focuses on rehabilitation and education, showcasing animals such as bears, mountain lions, and bald eagles.

Children can learn about the importance of wildlife conservation while observing the animals in a natural setting. The zoo also features a petting area, where younger kids can interact with domestic animals, making it a perfect stop for families seeking a fun and informative outing.

Big Bear Discovery Center: Explore Nature’s Wonders

Another great indoor option is the Big Bear Discovery Center. This educational facility provides interactive exhibits and information about the local ecosystem, wildlife, and outdoor activities in the area. Families can participate in guided nature walks, educational programs, and workshops designed to foster a love for nature in young children.

The center also serves as a hub for outdoor adventure information, helping families plan their activities and make the most of their time in Big Bear.

Conclusion: Embracing Family Fun in Big Bear

Big Bear is a treasure trove of family-friendly activities that cater to all ages, ensuring that your kids have a memorable experience while forging deeper family bonds. From thrilling outdoor adventures to engaging cultural experiences, there is no shortage of options to explore. Whether you’re hiking through scenic trails, enjoying a day at the lake, or creating art together, Big Bear promises an enriching getaway for families looking to connect and create lasting memories.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
