Marketing is an ever-evolving landscape. To stand out, brands need to be creative, daring, and even a little unconventional. Here are 11 campaigns that redefined the game, proving that sometimes, the best way to reach your audience is to leave the well-trodden path behind:

1. Old Spice’s “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like”: This 2010 campaign wasn’t just a commercial, it was an experience. Using the power of social media, Old Spice created a series of engaging videos, answering questions from fans in real-time. The result? A viral sensation that breathed new life into a classic brand.

2. Dove’s “Real Beauty Campaign”: This long-running campaign challenged traditional beauty standards by showcasing real women in all their diversity. It sparked conversations about self-acceptance and body positivity, creating an emotional connection with consumers.

3. Blendtec’s “Will It Blend?”: This campaign used humor and shock value to demonstrate the power of its blenders. By blending everything from iPhones to golf balls, Blendtec went viral, turning a mundane product into a cult classic.

4. Burger King’s “Whopper Sacrifice”: This campaign used social media to incentivize purchases. Fans could “sacrifice” their Facebook friends for a free Whopper, generating massive engagement and press.

5. Chipotle’s “Back to the Start”: This animated short film captured the essence of Chipotle’s commitment to fresh ingredients and ethical sourcing. It went viral, resonating with consumers who value sustainability and ethical practices.

6. Red Bull’s “Stratos”: This campaign featured Felix Baumgartner’s record-breaking skydive from the edge of space. It was a stunning spectacle that showcased Red Bull’s adventurous spirit and pushed the boundaries of what’s possible.

7. Airbnb’s “Live There”: This campaign focused on the experiences that come with staying in an Airbnb, using beautifully shot videos and showcasing the unique stories of hosts and guests.

8. Dollar Shave Club’s “Our Blades Are Great”: This direct-to-consumer brand embraced its irreverent tone with a hilarious and honest video that went viral and cemented its place in the market.

9. Nike’s “Just Do It”: This iconic slogan transcends a campaign, becoming a cultural phenomenon. It embodies the spirit of athleticism and encourages people to pursue their goals.

10. Oreo’s “Dunk in the Dark”: This campaign, launched during the 2013 Super Bowl power outage, used real-time marketing to create a viral sensation. By tweeting an image of an Oreo cookie with the caption “You can still dunk in the dark,” they capitalized on the moment and won the hearts of consumers.

11. Tide’s “It’s a Tide Ad”: This meta campaign took the concept of product placement to a new level. Tide turned its own ads into jokes, poking fun at the advertising industry while promoting its products.

These campaigns demonstrate that success lies in embracing creativity, understanding your audience, and being willing to take risks. When brands dare to be different, they break through the noise and create lasting impressions.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
