Setting up your second grade classroom can be an exciting but overwhelming task. As you prepare for the upcoming school year, it’s essential to have a checklist to ensure that you have everything you need. This ultimate checklist will help you organize your classroom and create a conducive learning environment for your students.

 Furniture and Layout:

  • Desks or tables: Make sure you have enough desks or tables for all your students. Consider the layout that allows for easy movement and collaboration.
  • Chairs: Provide comfortable chairs that are appropriate for your students’ age and size.
  • Teacher’s desk: Set up a designated area where you can work and keep essential materials.
  • Storage: Have shelves, cabinets, or bins to organize books, supplies, and student belongings.

Classroom Supplies:

  • Stationery: Stock up on pencil, pens, erasers, markers, crayons, and scissors.
  • Paper: Provide a variety of writing paper, construction paper, and graph paper.
  • Whiteboard or chalkboard: Choose the one that suits your teaching style and preference.
  • Bulletin boards: Use bulletin boards to display student work, announcements, and educational materials.
  • Classroom library: Set up a dedicated area with books at various reading levels and genres.
  • Technology: Determine what technology tools you’ll need, such as a projector, computer, or tablets.

Organization:

  • Classroom labels: Label storage areas, bookshelves, and materials to facilitate organization.
  • Student cubbies or backpack hooks: Allocate personalized spaces for students to store their belongings.
  • Readily accessible supplies: Arrange materials like pencils, papers, and erasers in easily accessible areas.
  • Teacher’s organization system: Develop a system for keeping track of assignments, student records, and other paperwork.

Decor and Visual Aids:

  • Alphabet chart: Hang an alphabet chart where students can easily refer to it.
  • Number line: Display a number line to assist with math concepts and counting.
  • Classroom rules and expectations: Create a poster with your classroom rules and display it prominently.
  • Educational posters: Decorate your walls with educational posters that reinforce learning objectives.
  • Student artwork display: Allocate space for displaying student artwork and projects.
  • Behavior management strategies: Establish a behavior management plan that encourages positive behavior.
  • Classroom procedures: Teach and establish clear procedures for routines like entering and exiting the classroom, transitioning between activities, and using materials.
  • Seating arrangement: Arrange student seating strategically to promote a positive learning environment.
  • Classroom jobs: Assign classroom jobs to promote responsibility and create a sense of ownership among students.

Safety and Emergency Preparedness:

  • Emergency procedures: Develop and review emergency procedures with your students.
  • First aid kit: Have a well-stocked first aid kit readily accessible in the classroom.
  • Fire safety: Ensure that fire extinguishers and fire alarm systems are in place and functional.
  • Safety guidelines: Display safety guidelines for various classroom activities, including science experiments and art projects.

Remember, this checklist is a starting point, and you can tailor it to meet the unique needs of your classroom. Creating a well-organized and inviting learning environment sets the stage for a successful school year.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
