Introduction

As the world of 3D printing continues to grow and evolve, users have more choices than ever when it comes to the materials they can use for their projects. In 2023, some of the best 3D printing filaments include PLA (Polylactic Acid), ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol), and many others. This article will explore these materials and help you decide which one is best for your specific applications.

PLA (Polylactic Acid)

PLA is a biodegradable and environmentally friendly material derived from renewable resources like cornstarch or sugarcane. It has become one of the most popular filaments for 3D printing due to its ease of use, low odor, and wide range of available colors. This versatile material is an excellent choice for beginners as it does not require a heated bed and can be printed at lower temperatures compared to other filaments.

Pros:

– Biodegradable

– Easy to work with

– Low odor

Cons:

– Less strength compared to ABS

– Not suitable for high temperature or heavy load applications

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)

ABS is a petroleum-based thermoplastic with high strength and durability. It is commonly used in automotive parts, toys, and electronics enclosures due to its resilience and ability to withstand higher temperatures. However, ABS can produce unpleasant fumes during printing and must be properly ventilated.

Pros:

– Strong and durable

– Resistant to high temperatures

Cons:

– Requires a heated bed

– Produces toxic fumes during printing

– Can be challenging for beginners

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol)

PETG is a strong, flexible, and durable filament that is becoming increasingly popular among 3D printing enthusiasts. It offers excellent layer adhesion, reduced bed adhesion problems, and resistance to water and UV light. PETG is the perfect filament for the applications that demand both strength and flexibility.

Pros:

– Strong and flexible

– Good layer adhesion

– UV resistant

Cons:

– Prone to oozing/stringing during 3D printing

– Requires more careful temperature management

 Other Notable Filaments

There are many other filament options on the market today tailored to specific functions or desirable qualities. Some examples include:

  1. TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) – A flexible and elastic material known for its great resistance to abrasion, making it suitable for making phone cases, automotive parts, and wearable items.
  2. HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) – A soluble support material often used with ABS that dissolves when exposed to limonene.
  3. Wood-based filaments – These filaments provide a unique aesthetic appeal by combining plastic polymers with wood fibers, resulting in a printed object with a wood-like appearance.

Conclusion

With the numerous options in 3D printing filaments available today, finding the perfect material for your project can be challenging. PLA, ABS, and PETG are popular choices due to their versatility and ease of use. However, always consider factors such as material properties, durability requirements, environmental impact, and your individual skill level when selecting a filament type. In the end, it is essential to experiment with various filaments to find what works best for your specific needs in the dynamic world of 3D printing.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
