Suzanne Nossel, the Chief Executive Officer of PEN America, has dedicated her career to promoting free expression, literature, and the fundamental tenets of democracy. A former diplomat, human rights advocate, and author, Nossel’s multifaceted journey has been profoundly informed by her love for reading and literature, which she views as essential tools for understanding the world and catalyzing change.

Early Influences and the Role of Reading

Nossel’s reading life began early, nurtured by a family that celebrated literature and the arts. She recalls being drawn to great works of fiction and non-fiction alike—books that challenged her perceptions and broadened her understanding of societal complexities. Authors such as Toni Morrison, Gabriel García Márquez, and George Orwell left a lasting impression on her, shaping her beliefs about the power of storytelling to evoke empathy and inspire action.

In interviews, Nossel has often emphasized the critical role reading plays in her life. She believes that literature fosters a sense of connection and awareness, providing readers with perspectives that they might not encounter in their daily lives. This notion is especially relevant in today’s polarized world, where understanding diverse viewpoints is more crucial than ever.

The Advocate’s Perspective

Nossel’s reading habits have not only served as a source of personal enrichment but also as a foundational element of her professional life. As head of PEN America—a renowned organization that champions free expression and literature—she has witnessed the immediate impacts of censorship and the silencing of voices worldwide. Nossel’s unwavering commitment to literary freedom is rooted in her belief that reading and writing are essential for democracy.

Under her leadership, PEN America has undertaken numerous initiatives to support authors facing persecution, promote the importance of reading in educational settings, and advocate against the censoring of literature. Nossel often cites the vital connection between literature and social justice, arguing that stories can ignite movements and foster understanding across cultural divides.

Balancing Professionalism with Passion

Nossel’s relentless advocacy is balanced by her personal reading pursuits. Amid her busy schedule, she makes it a point to carve out time for the books that resonate with her, from contemporary novels to thought-provoking essays. She regularly shares her reading lists with the PEN community, further encouraging others to engage with diverse literary voices.

This personal touch not only enriches her own life but also nurtures a collective love of literature within the PEN community. By opening up about her reading experiences, Nossel invites others to explore and discover, reinforcing the organization’s mission to promote the written word as a means of expression and connection.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Literature and Free Expression

In her role at PEN America, Nossel is acutely aware of the future challenges that literature and free expression face globally. The rise of misinformation, increased censorship, and assaults on democratic institutions pose significant threats to literary freedom. Nonetheless, she maintains an optimistic outlook, believing that literature has the power to transcend boundaries and foster dialogue.

Her deep-rooted belief in the importance of reading continues to guide her efforts. By promoting literacy and advocating for writers, she aims to cultivate a culture where literature thrives and is accessible to all. Nossel’s vision for PEN America is not only about safeguarding freedom of expression but also about inspiring a new generation of readers and writers who will carry the torch forward.

Final Thoughts

Suzanne Nossel’s reading life is a testament to the profound impact literature can have—not only on individuals but also on society as a whole. As she leads PEN America into a future filled with challenges and opportunities, her passion for reading and advocacy serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role that words play in shaping our world. Through her efforts, Nossel continues to inspire a love for literature and the belief in its transformative power, ensuring that the voices of writers remain strong and vibrant in the face of adversity.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
