As we close the chapter on one year and start a new, reflection on the past is inevitable. Just like each year comes with its own share of trending topics, breakthroughs, and popular discussions, 2018 was no exception. In this article, we will revisit some of the best stories from 2018 that left a significant impact on readers worldwide.

1. “Becoming” by Michelle Obama

One cannot discuss the best stories of 2018 without mentioning Michelle Obama’s powerful and inspiring memoir, “Becoming.” The former First Lady shares her life journey and experiences that shaped her into who she is now. This story captured hearts and minds across the globe, encouraging readers to reflect on their paths in life.

2. “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” by Heather Morris

Based on the true story of Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew who survived Auschwitz to become its tattooist; this heart-wrenching novel showcases harrowing accounts of love and resilience in the time of Holocaust. Heather Morris’ writing bound readers to Lale’s story as it unfolded through his eyes.

3. “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens

Delia Owens’ debut novel was not just an instant hit but went on to become one of the most talked-about books in 2018. This coming-of-age story set in North Carolina follows Kya Clark, a mysterious ‘Marsh Girl,’ and weaves a tale about loneliness, prejudice, and love.

4. “Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup” by John Carreyrou

The shocking revelation of Theranos’ fraudulent activities took center stage in 2018 with John Carreyrou’s detailed reporting. This true account traces Elizabeth Holmes’ ascent to fame as a young tech entrepreneur and exposes the unethical business practices that fleece investors of millions of dollars.

5. “Educated: A Memoir” by Tara Westover

In her striking memoir, Tara Westover tells the tale of her escape from a conservative and abusive family background. It unfolds the process of self-discovery and personal development as she overcomes countless hurdles to gain an education and transform her life.

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
