Teaching Students About When Vaping was Invented
Vaping has become increasingly popular among young people in recent years, but many are unaware of its origins and how it came to be. As educators, it is important to educate our students about the history and evolution of vaping, as well as the potential risks associated with the practice.
Vaping, short for “vaporizing,” refers to the act of inhaling and exhaling aerosol, or vapor, produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device. The first patent for an electronic cigarette was filed in 1965 by Herbert A. Gilbert, but it wasn’t until the early 2000s that vaping gained popularity as a smoking alternative.
In 2003, a Chinese pharmacist named Hon Lik invented the modern electronic cigarette after his father, a heavy smoker, died of lung cancer. Lik created a device that utilized a battery-powered heating element to vaporize a solution of nicotine and propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin.
After being introduced in China, electronic cigarettes quickly spread to Europe and the United States. By 2006, the first commercial e-cigarette was sold in the U.S. by a company called Ruyan, and vaping became a popular alternative to smoking.
However, it wasn’t until the mid-2010s that vaping became a widespread phenomenon among young people. The introduction of sleeker, more stylish devices and a variety of flavors, such as fruit and candy, led to a surge in popularity among teens.
Today, vaping is a major public health concern, with many experts warning about its potential risks. E-cigarettes still contain nicotine, which is highly addictive, as well as other harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. Additionally, there have been reports of lung injury and even death associated with vaping.
As educators, it is our responsibility to ensure that our students have accurate information about vaping and its history. We can incorporate lessons about the invention and evolution of electronic cigarettes, the risks associated with vaping, and the potential impact on health and wellness.
