**Lieutenant**

The title ‘Lieutenant’ has its roots in French, where ‘Lieu’ means ‘in place’ and ‘tenant’ means ‘holding’. In essence, a lieutenant is someone who takes ‘place’ or acts for a higher authority when they are absent.

In many countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, Lieutenant is a commissioned officer rank in the army, navy or air force. The rank just above a second lieutenant and below a captain in most structures.

A Lieutenant’s role varies greatly depending on the military realm. In general, they are responsible for leading platoon-sized units ranging from 16 to 44 soldiers or acting as an executive officer in certain units.

**Lieutenant Colonel**

Moving up the military hierarchy, we have the Lieutenant Colonel rank. It is superior to Major and inferior to Colonel. Just like Lieutenants, a Lieutenant Colonel holds place of colonel in their absence.

A Lieutenant Colonel generally serves as battalion commanders overseeing 300 to 1,000 soldiers in a battalion. In addition to that, they have considerable administrative duties including advising higher ranking officers and civilian officials on matters of tactics, policies and procedures.

**The Difference**

1. **Position**: A major difference lies in their responsibilities and roles within their respective military organizations. While Lieutenants lead smaller group of soldiers (platoon), Lieutenant Colonels leads larger ones (battalion).

2. **Experience**: A Lieutenant typically represents a soldier’s first commission upon completion of Officer Candidate School or an equivalent program; they are essentially the newcomers of officer ranks. On the other hand, Lieutenant Colonels are veterans; they have worked their way through multiple positions before reaching this level.

3. **Authority**: Another key difference resides in their authority level. A Lieutenant Colonel being higher up in hierarchy commands more respect and wield more influence compared to a Lieutenant.
