Ready-made kit for summer school programs includes the neuroscience-designed Fast ForWord® program, training, and motivational materials to help students make lasting gains

Oakland, Calif. — March 16, 2017 — To catch up to their peers, struggling readers need 10 to 30 times more practice on reading skills. With the Summer Reading Boot Camp Kit from Scientific Learning Corp. (OTC PINK:SCIL), K-12 teachers and administrators now have an all-in-one solution to provide the intensity of practice needed to help students address the root cause of their reading difficulty and achieve fast and lasting gains in summer school.

The Summer Reading Boot Camp Kit includes a bundle of Fast ForWord® licenses, web-based training, implementation instructions, and motivational materials for students. Using this out-of-the-box intervention program, educators can help students quickly fill in gaps by preparing the brain to read, delivering intensive language and literacy practice, and providing a personal reading coach for every student.

Developed by neuroscientists, the Fast ForWord online reading intervention prepares the brain to read by targeting working memory, attention and processing speed in the context of language and reading exercises. It provides intense, personalized adaptive practice in grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening comprehension, which develops automaticity. Further, using patented speech verification technology, the program “listens” to students as they read aloud, offering support with decoding and pronunciation at the moment they need it.

“Boot camps work because they’re intense, and this intensity is exactly what struggling readers need to remediate the underlying difficulties that keep them from making progress,” said Robert C. Bowen, CEO of Scientific Learning. “No other program is as evidence-based or provides the level of intensity and corrective feedback that the Fast ForWord program does. With the Summer Reading Boot Camp Kit, educators simply open the box, complete the online training, and they’re set up to succeed and have fun with their students. With this kit, educators can help students beat the dreaded ‘summer slide’ and close persistent reading gaps so they can start the school year ready to learn.”

About Us

The Edvocate was created in 2014 to argue for shifts in education policy and organization in order to enhance the quality of education and the opportunities for learning afforded to P-20 students in America. What we envisage may not be the most straightforward or the most conventional ideas. We call for a relatively radical and certainly quite comprehensive reorganization of America’s P-20 system.

That reorganization, though, and the underlying effort, will have much to do with reviving the American education system, and reviving a national love of learning.  The Edvocate plans to be one of key architects of this revival, as it continues to advocate for education reform, equity, and innovation.
