Activities to Teach Students Which Customary Unit of Length Is Appropriate: Inches, Feet, or Yards

When it comes to measuring objects in the United States, it’s important for students to understand the appropriate customary unit of length to use. This can be confusing at first, but with some engaging classroom activities, students can master the concept and feel confident in their ability to select the right unit.
Here are five activities that teachers can use to teach students which customary unit of length is appropriate:
Measure and Sort Objects:
Have students collect a variety of objects such as pencils, books, and desks. Next, they should measure each object using a ruler and determine whether it should be measured in inches, feet, or yards. They can then sort the objects into corresponding categories.
Classroom Scavenger Hunt:
Create a scavenger hunt throughout the classroom where students have to find objects and measure them using different units of length. For example, they could measure the length of the chalkboard in feet, the height of a bookshelf in inches, and the distance from one side of the room to the other in yards.
Length Relay Race:
Divide the class into teams and set up stations throughout the classroom or playground. Each station should have an object that needs to be measured using a specific unit of length. The first student in each group has to run to the station, measure the object, and shout out whether it should be measured in inches, feet, or yards before running back to tag their teammate.
Which Unit Is Best?:
Give students several scenarios where they have to choose which unit of length is best suited for measuring. For example, ask them whether they should measure how long it takes to walk around the playground in inches, feet, or yards, or whether they should measure the length of a pencil in inches, inches and feet, or feet.
Create a Length Chart:
Students can create a chart that lists common objects and the appropriate unit of length to use when measuring them. They can work in groups to brainstorm objects and then research the appropriate measurement unit.
By using these activities, students will develop a strong foundation in understanding the appropriate customary unit of length to use when measuring objects. As they become more comfortable with the concept, they’ll be able to apply this knowledge to real-world situations with ease.
